Event Preview
To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, under the guidance of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United Arab Emirates, the “A Moonment to Remember” Mid-Autumn Festival performance will be staged on September 17 in Abu Dhabi. The event is jointly organized by the Cultural Foundation Abu Dhabi, the China National Peking Opera Company, and the China Cultural Center in the UAE, with coordination from the Bank of China. The performance will feature a selection of classic Peking Opera excerpts presented by the China National Peking Opera Company, encompassing both civil and martial scenes and showcasing a full range of character roles, offering a multi-faceted presentation of the artistry and charm of Peking Opera.
Program Highlights
1. On the Crossroad: A classic martial arts piece, this legendary “fight in the dark” is performed on a fully lit stage – watch how the actors use stylized movements to convey a thrilling nocturnal combat.
2. Selling Water: A lively and spirited duet between the young maid Meiying and the noble lady Huang Guiying, featuring melodic arias and exquisite acting that fully display the grace of the Huadan (young female role in Peking Opera).
3. The King Bidding Farewell To His Consort: A masterpiece of the Mei Lanfang school, the sword dance of Yu Ji is poignant and stirring, reenacting the tragic farewell between a hero at his end and his beloved.
4. Havoc in The Heavenly Kingdom: Adapted from “Journey to the West“, watch how the “Great Sage Equal to Heaven,” Sun Wukong, boldly battles the heavenly troops – a scene full of lively martial action and delightful humor.
